Girls On Tour In Vienna

This blog post has been lingering around in my drafts for ages now, so it’s about time I finally posted it! A couple of months back I went on holiday with the girls to Vienna. It was a nice quick city break just to chill and relax and enjoy the sights. So below is a summary of all the stuff that we got up to during our time there. Hope you enjoy it! (Vlog of trip here)

The Departure

We flew from Birmingham Airport and made sure that we got there with enough time so that we could enjoy something to eat before the flight over. The flight was late in the evening so we knew that nothing would be available once we got there. We decided to try the restaurant Giraffe in the terminal. I had never eaten there before so was eager to try it. Of course we started of with some cocktails: Strawberry & Basil Daiquiri with class Havana Club 3 year rum and lime and the Mango Colada Absolut Mango vodka, Havana Club 3 Year rum, creamy coconut milk, pineapple and lime.

To eat we had: Nachos Nirvana with warm black bean chilli, melted Monterey Jack cheese, jalapenos, chipotle, guacamole and sour cream topped with chicken. The Spicy Rice Bowl with nourishing brown rice with sugar snaps, red peppers, crispy onions, chilli and soy sauce topped with chicken.

The Hotel

We had booked to stay at Meliá Vienna which is Austria’s tallest skyscraper with 360 views of the Danube River and the city through the floor to ceiling windows, so it was no wonder that I was extremely excited to stay there. We arrived late at night so my initial pictures were quite dark so I had to wait until the next morning to take some more pictures in natural light.

Our rooms offered a large bed with superior quality linen, a nespresso coffee machine with capsules included (which I made sure I utilised in the morning) and a minibar which was complimentary to use and got one free refill everyday that you stayed. It only contained some soft drinks and beers so we didn’t get that wild!

The bathrooms were what I called bathroom goals. It had a large wet room shower area with a rainfall shower head and your complimentary amenity kits included by the sink. Can I just say the lighting in the bathroom was amazing, it may not have been naturally lit but some amazing selfies took place in that bathroom (lol). The only thing missing was a bath tub and then it would have been complete – but minor details.

The Food

The Rollercoaster Restaurant

I have always wanted to try out one of the roller coaster restaurants, so when I found out there was one in Vienna I didn’t waste any time in going there. The restaurant only opened up on the 1st April 2016 but it has been going strong ever since.

The whole room is filled with small roller coaster tracks for your food and drinks so slide down once they have been prepared by the robots upstairs. It sounds very iRobot but it was fun to try out. You order your food through the ipads that they give you on your selected tables, which enables the robots to know where to send your food to.

57 Lounge

At the Melia hotel that we stayed at there is a restaurant called the 57 Restaurant/Lounge. It is located on the top floor of the hotel where you can enjoy cocktails and light bar snacks if you don’t want to indulge in full on meal. The lounge plays live music on thursdays and has a DJ every friday and saturday night so there is always some entertainment. Being on the top floor of the hotel you always get to witness the amazing skyline views of Vienna throughout the night.

UNKAI Sushi Bar

It may seem odd that we travelled all the way to Vienna and ended up having sushi but when you like something you like it! During our tourist day of walking around and sight seeing, we came across this sushi bar that is located on the ground floor of the Grand Hotel Wein. The hotel certainly does live up to it’s name as it’s very grand inside, even if it was just the lobby and the restaurant that I saw.

The restaurant has a large a la carte menu that you can choose your favourite dishes from or if you’re in a rush you can create a box to take away.

We chose the California Maki (2nd picture/on the left – 3rd picture on the left) which contains: Crayfish, king prawn, avocado, mayonnaise.

Avocado Maki (2nd picture/on the right – 3rd picture on the right) which contains avocado wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Shake Maki with Ebi (3rd picture in the middle) which contains: salmon wrapped in rice and seaweed and king prawns on top of rice.

The full range of their menu can be found here.

Da Luigi

Walking around all day can certainly work up an appetite, which is why we were so glad to stumble across this italian restaurant. There were so many things to choose from that it was almost impossible to come to a decision.

For starters we got bruschetta, tomato & mozzarella salad and garlic pizza bread. Then for the mains we had gnocchi, spaghetti bolognese and spaghetti aioli. It was a lot of carb-o-loading but we sat there and ate it all! In fact I think we all agreed it was one of the best meals that we had all trip so thank you Da Luigi for an amazing meal!

Well if we didn’t do much sight seeing we made up for it in eating. Another restaurant that we managed to try out was Natraj . A lovely indian cuisine restaurant. The customer service here was wonderful and they were so attentive to us that it made the whole experience amazing. It also helped that the food was really tasty too.

I won’t bore you with what we had as it’s the usual western indian food that we had, curries, rice, poppadoms and naan bread!

Things to Do

The Vienna Pass

There were so many things to see and do in Vienna that we thought it would be good to invest in the Vienna Pass. This pass entitled us to free entry to 60+ attractions with fast track entry. We also got to experience some of the sights of vienna with free use of the Hop on hop off vienna sightseeing tour bus along with a free guidebook.

Below are some of the places we went to visit using the vienna pass:

Madame Tussauds

Schönbrunn Palace & The Grand Tour

Danube Tower

Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel

Sigmund Freud Museum

Schönbrunn Zoo

and much more!

Before this post gets any longer I will post the rest of the pictures on my blogs facebook page.

This summarizes my trip to Vienna! I know I have been here a few times for work but it was nice to experience it as a holiday and relaxing.
